That&#8217;s 10 losses, including one game that appears on this list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We traveled more than 58,000 miles in search of the finest escape rooms in the world.<\/strong>\u00a0Our journey took us to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>75 cities and towns<\/li>\n<li>15 US states<\/li>\n<li>7 countries<\/li>\n<li>3 conferences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We played more escape rooms this year than we have in all other years combined.<\/p>\n<p>We also put a heavy focus on hunting down top games wherever we traveled, so in addition to playing more games, we mostly played games that ranged from good to phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>2017 spoiled us. In the end these ones rose to the top.<\/p>\n<h3>Rules<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>We only considered games that we both played in 2017. (We did not consider either Time Run or any of the Polish games because only one of us visited these companies.) <em>Update: In 2024, we retroactive awarded the Time Run games.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>We both had to agree to award the room the Golden Lock-In.<\/li>\n<li>We established no arbitrary minimum or maximum number of rooms that could appear on the list.<\/li>\n<li>A company could only win once for the year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>2017 Golden Lock-In Winners<\/h3>\n<p><em>Listed chronologically in the order we played them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/02\/21\/15-locks-lab-rats-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lab Rats<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>15 Locks &#8211; Austin, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Visually simple, yet deceptively complex, <em>Lab Rats<\/em> was the most phenomenal large-team game we\u2019ve played because this colorful experiment optimized for collaboration across separated spaces through inventive game mechanics.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/02\/15\/the-crux-escape-dead-air-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dead Air<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Crux Escape \u00a0&#8211; Niagara Falls, Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Rock &amp; roll might be a shambling corpse, but this rock &amp; roll zombie apocalypse was alive. <em>Dead Air<\/em> was cohesive, elegant, humorous, and perhaps most shockingly\u2026 it made sense, story included. We sent so many attendees of the Room Escape Conference to visit this low-budget masterpiece and they all returned smiling.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/02\/24\/komnata-quest-maze-of-hakaina-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maze of Hakaina<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Komnata Quest, Manhattan &#8211; New York, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Maze of Hakaina<\/em> dropped us into a Japanese-inspired and video game-esque labyrinth that came to a very pointed climax.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/06\/07\/sherlocked-the-vault-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Vault<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sherlocked &#8211; Amsterdam, The Netherlands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We raced from a parking garage to Amsterdam\u2019s historic Beurs van Berlage and talked our way past a guard into a hidden and majestic basement. <em>The Vault<\/em> captured the heart-racing, blood-pumping feel of a Hollywood heist.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/06\/14\/escape-room-netherlands-girls-room\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girl\u2019s Room<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Escape Room Netherlands &#8211; Bunschoten-Spakenburg, The Netherlands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Girl\u2019s Room<\/em> felt alive\u2026 and angry. The extensive and thoughtful technology made it feel like we weren\u2019t alone in this dark and twisted thriller. While it was a trek to get to Escape Room Netherlands from Amsterdam, if you\u2019re brave enough, it\u2019s worth the journey.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/07\/10\/escapade-games-zoe-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zoe<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Escapade Games &#8211; Anaheim, California<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">F****** terrifying. In Escapade\u2019s haunted house with escape room mechanics as gates, we were mind controlled and at the mercy of <em>Zoe<\/em> as she paralyzed us with fear\u2026 then made us solve puzzles.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/07\/28\/escape-the-room-nyc-clock-tower-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clock Tower<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Escape The Room NYC &#8211; New York, New York &amp; Boston, Massachusetts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Peak puzzles: <em>Clock Tower<\/em> was a love letter to escape room players. It looked beautiful and played even better. Technology seamlessly connected brilliant and occasionally devious puzzles and props, making us earn our victory.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/09\/17\/riddle-room-utopia-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utopia<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Riddle Room &#8211; Minneapolis, Minnesota<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Utopia<\/em> was an illusion. When we first entered the gamespace, we worried we\u2019d hate it. Behind its deceptively simple facade we discovered brilliant physical and digital puzzles that carried a narrative and challenged our assumptions of what escape rooms could or should be.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/10\/02\/room-lost-treasure-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lost Treasure<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>The Room &#8211; Berlin, Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Lost Treasure<\/em> was a masterpiece of game and adventure design. The energy, effects, and beauty of this game made us feel like we were Indiana Jones. When we won, we didn\u2019t want to leave. Months later we are still amazed by how much detail The Room crammed into this game, yet it never felt distracting or misleading.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/09\/29\/haunted-scarehouse-great-room-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Great Room<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>13th Hour Escape Games &#8211; Wharton, NJ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Slightly creepy and seriously playful, <em>The Great Room<\/em> impressed us on multiple levels. From the dynamic introduction, to the puzzles, to the gamespace itself, it was a great room.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/11\/13\/rise-escape-rooms-spellbound-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spellbound<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>RISE Escape Rooms &#8211; Tickfaw, Louisiana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Spellbound\u2019s<\/em> witches vs vampires drama brought together the old and new: hefty locks and magical opens, common puzzle types and new twists, all in a beautifully weathered set that gave way to so many surprises.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/11\/25\/13th-gate-escape-tomb-anubis-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomb of Anubis<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>13th Gate Escape &#8211; Baton Rouge, Louisiana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I cannot think of an escape room moment more dramatic than the opening reveal of <em>Tomb of Anubis<\/em>. The scale of this adventure was as daunting as it was enchanting.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/11\/20\/escape-room-inventors-attic-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inventor\u2019s Attic<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Escape My Room &#8211; New Orleans, Louisiana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Escape My Room\u2019s themed facility, the DeLaporte estate, captivated us with its decor, characters, and eccentricity. <em>Inventor\u2019s Attic<\/em> pinnacled their unified aesthetic through elaborate mechanisms, interconnected oddities, beautiful reveals, and smart puzzles.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/11\/07\/strange-bird-immersive-man-beyond-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Man from Beyond<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Strange Bird Immersive &#8211; Houston, Texas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Strange Bird Immersive\u2019 s theatrical escape room hybrid was so powerful that we teared up. In <em>The Man from Beyond<\/em>, the push and pull of actors and puzzles didn\u2019t compete; they intertwined. The performance was as moving and fine tuned as the mechanical puzzles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/11\/03\/time-run-lance-longinus-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Lance of Longinus<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Time Run &#8211; London, UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;Lance of Longinus was years ahead of its time, blending story, setting, and gameplay into an adventurous world populated by characters that we cared about and respected. Each segment was loaded with compelling details that enriched the story without bogging it down. Any individual room within this game could have carried a stand-alone escape room.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/12\/13\/basement-elevator-shaft-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Elevator Shaft<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>THE BASEMENT &#8211; Sylmar, California<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Elevator Shaft<\/em> was exhilarating and loaded with edgy practical effects. THE BASEMENT\u2019s latest thriller locked us inside of a menacing elevator shaft reimagined in the image of the Death Star trash compactor.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/roomescapeartist.com\/2017\/12\/26\/puzzalarium-parlor-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Parlour<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Puzzalarium &#8211; San Diego, California<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The Parlour<\/em> combined puzzles with resource optimization, creating an intriguing hybrid tabletop game and escape room.
